음주운전 vs 졸음운전

And if we all know that driving drunk is dangerous, what about driving sleepy? You know that groggy time late at night or after a hard day on the job. A different order of danger? Not necessarily. 

음주 운전이 위험하다는 것은 우리 모두가 알고 있는 사실이라면, 졸음 운전은 어떨까? 늦은 밤 아주 피로할 때, 혹은 직장에서 힘든 하루를 보낸 후 운전하는 것 말이다. 이건 다른 종류의 위험일까? 반드시 그렇지는 않다. 

Two drivers, knocking down cones, slamming into obstacles. Neither is in any shape to be behind the wheel. Both are driving like drunks, but only one is.

두 명의 운전자가 콘을 넘어뜨리고, 장애물을 향해 돌진한다. 누구도 바퀴 뒤에 있을 모습은 아니다.(운전을 할 수 있을 상태가 아니다.) 두 사람 전부 취한 것 처럼 운전을 하지만, 실은 한 사람만 음주자이다.

There are two sets of volunteer drivers out here to road test a researcher's theory that driving sleepy can be every bit as lethal as driving drunk.

졸음운전이 음주운전만큼 위험하다는 한 연구자의 가설을 실험(도로 주행)하기 위해 두 그룹의 지원자가 운전을 하기 위해 나왔다. 

One set of volunteers drank alcohol until scientists determined they were at or over the limit in most states. A second group, groggy from lost sleep. Some scraping by on just four or five hours a night. The very thing so many of us do all the time.

한 그룹은 과학자들이 술에 취했다고 판단하거나 혹은 그 이상의 과음주 상태까지 술을 마셨다. 다른 그룹은 하루에 4~5시간을 자는 방식으로 수면 부족을 유도했다. 우리가 종종 하는 그런 방식이다. 

Dr.Powell watches closely, keeping careful notes. Around and around the test track they go, smashing into dart-out surprises, a stuffed dog. To our array of cameras, the sleepys with their eyes blinking closed did as poorly as the glassy-eyed drunks. Dr.Powell is now interpreting the data he gathered for a scientific paper he'll present this fall. But it's not too soon for preliminary conclusions.

파웰 박사는 자세히 관찰하며, 세세히 노트했다. 실험 트랙을 계속해서 돌수록, 돌발적으로 튀어나오는 강아지 모형의 장애물을 치고 지나갔다. 카메라로 관찰했을 때, 눈을 감다시피 깜빡거리는 수면 부족 운전자들은 음주 운전자들 만큼이나 나쁘게 운전을 했다. 파웰 박사는 가을에 발표할 논문을 위해 수집한 자료들을 분석하고 있다. 그러나 사전에 결과를 발표하기에도 충분히 늦지 않았다.(지금 발표해도 충분하다.)
