미국의 총기 소지와 자기 방어

얼마전에 총기사고가 발생한 뉴스를 읽으면서, '사건이 발생한지 꽤 오랜 시간이 지났는데도 메인 뉴스에 올라오는 구나.' 라고 생각하고 있었는데, 짧은 Term을 두고 발생한 두 건의 사고였다.

Self-defense. It's one of the most powerful and frequent arguments made by the National Rifle Association. That guns used for self protection are used thousands of times every day. It's estimated there are more than 200 million guns in this country now, approximately 70 million gun owners. But are guns really used that often for self-defense? 

'정당방위'는 미국 총기 협회가 주장하는 가장 강력하고 빈번하게 등장하는 논쟁거리이다. 자기방어를 위해 매일 수천 번의 총기가 사용되고 있다는 것이다. 미국에는 2억 정이 넘는 총기와 약 7천만 명의 총기 소지자가 있는 것으로 추산된다. 그러나 이 총들이 정말로 자기 방어를 위해서 그렇게 자주 사용 될까? 

Mike Merse considers himself living proof that a gun at home helps stop criminals. Two years ago, a man breaks into his house, he confronts the intruder and they struggle.

마이크 머스는 집에 총기를 보유하는 것이 범죄 예방을 도와준다는 측면에서, 자신이 바로 살아있는 증거라고 생각한다. 2년 전, 한 남자가 그의 집에 침입 하였고, 마이크는 침입자와 몸싸움을 벌였다.

"He was on top of me with one hand balancing himself, and the other hand pressing against my throat."

"그(범인)는 제 몸 위에 올라타서 한 손으로 균형을 잡고, 다른 한 손으로 저의 목을 졸랐죠."

Merse breaks free and dashes into the kitchen, grabs his loaded pistol and points it at his attacker.

머스는 범인에게서 탈출하여 주방으로 달려간 후, 그의 장전된 총을 집고 범인에게 겨눴다.

"Once the gun came out, everything was over."

"총이 등장하는 순간, 모든것이 끝이 났어요."

Holding the intruder at gunpoint, Merse calls police. The man later pleads guilty to the break-in and assault. To the National Rifle Association, it's another case of self-defense with a gun, something the group says happens in astonishing 2.5 million times a year.

총구를 범인에게 겨눈 채, 머스는 경찰에게 전화를 했다. 이후 침입자는 침입과 폭력에 대한 유죄를 인정하였다. 미국 총기 협회는 이 사건을 총을 이용한 자기 방어라고 하였으며, 이런 사건이 1년에 250만 건이나 발생한다고 한다. 

One of the most important reasons the NRA says that the government should not limit the right to own or carry guns or restrict options to buy them. But are there really 2.5 million cases of self-defense with a gun a year, an average of 6,800 times a day? 

이는 총기를 소지할 수 있는 권리를 정부가 제한하면 안된다고 NRA가 주장하는 이유 중 하나이다. 하지만 정말로 총을 이용한 자기 방어가 연간 250만 건이나 발생할까? 하루 평균 6,800건의 사건이?

The Florida criminologist who came up with the number through telephone surveys says it might actually be much higher.

전화 설문을 통해 수치를 산정한 플로리다의 범죄학자는 어쩌면 사건 수가 더 높을 수도 있다고 말한다.

"It's a big country. It's a country with 270 plus million people in it, and it's a country that has a lot of crime."

"여기는 거대한 국가이며, 2억 7천만 명이 살고 있습니다. 그리고 많은 범죄가 일어나는 국가입니다."
