미국의 외국어 학습 장려

The study says more American students are studying foreign languages across the country.

한 연구에 따르면, 전국적으로 더 많은 미국 학생들이 외국어를 공부하고 있다.

Russian was the top language in demand 50 years ago. But today, more American students are interested in learning Chinese, Arabic, and other languages. 

50전만 해도 러시아어가 최상단에 있었으나, 오늘날은 중국어, 아랍어 및 다른 언어에 더욱 많은 관심을 가지고 있다. 

Michael Lemmon is one of the members of the National Research Council committee that conducted the study.

이 연구를 수행한 국립 리서치 위원회의 멤버 중 한 사람인 마이클 레먼은 

"As you have, China become one of the great emerging powers in the international system. Similarly, we have seen a tremendous expansion, although not on the same scale as in Chinese, with Arabic programs."

"중국은 국제 사회에서 대단한 신흥세력이 되었다. 이와 유사하게 우리는 중국어 까지는 아니지만 아랍어 프록램도 대단한 성장을 볼 수 있다."

Lemmon and other committee members reviewed and evaluated 14 different foreign language programs in U.S. schools and universities. 

레먼을 비롯한 위원회의 다른 멤버들은 대학을 포함한 미국의 학교를 대상으로 14개의 외국어 프로그램을 검토하고 평가하였다.

Committee members also visited various universities and spoke with students. Committee Chair Janet Norwood says for many of those students, learning a foreign language is a life-changing experience.

위원회 위원들은 여러 대학교에 방문하여 학생들과 이야기를 나누었다. 위원장 쟈넷 노르우드는 학생들에게 외국어를 학습하는 것은 인생을 바꿀만한 경험이라고 말한다.

"There was a young man who said to me, 'You don't understand what this has done for me. I've learned a language. I've gone out and spent a summer working in a company in that language. It has changed mt whole life.'"

"제게 이런 말을 했던 젊은 청년이 있었어요. '외국어가 제게 어떤 영향을 미쳤는지 당신은 모를거예요. 저는 외국어 하나를 배웠고, 그 언어를 사용하는 회사에서 여름 동안 일을 했어요. 그게 제 인생을 바꿔놓았죠.'"

Norwood says the committee recommends adopting more language study abroad programs to allow young Americans to understand foreign cultures as well.

위원회는 어린 미국인들이 해외 문화에 대해 잘 알 수 있도록 많은 해외 어학 프로그램을 선택할 것을 권한다고 노르우드는 말한다.

"It's not enough just to be able to speak to someone in their own language. You need to understand how they think, what their issues are, what their problems are."

"외국인과 그들의 언어로 대화하는 것 만으로는 충분하지 않습니다. 외국인들이 어떻게 생각하고, 그들의 이슈, 문제가 무엇인지를 이해할 수 있어야 합니다."
