인체의 신비 전시회

In the middle of a dimly lit exhibition hall in suburban Washington D.C., a dissected human body lies inside a glass case.

워싱턴 D.C.의 교외에 있는 한 지역에 위치한 희미한 불빛 속의 전시관 중앙에는 해부된 인체가 유리관 속에 놓여 있다. 

Around it, visitors gaze. They don't cringe in horror or disgust. They don't gasp in shock.

방문객들은 유리관 주변에 모여 그것들을 바라본다. 사람들은 공포나 역겨움에 겁먹지 않으며, 쇼크가 올 정도로 놀라지도 않는다.

They just examine it with keen interest. This skinless specimen could be them.

그들은 단지 강한 호기심으로 조각난 인체를 관찰할 뿐이다. 이 피부가 없는 인체 표본들은 자기 자신의 모습이 될 수도 있다.

This and the rest of the rubberized mummies exhibited here help people understand how a human body fuctions from inside out.

이 곳에 전시된 고무를 입힌 미라들은 사람들이 인체가 어떤 식으로 기능하는지에 대한 이해를 도와준다.

Each body showcases different bodily functions, maladies, and injuries.

각각의 인체는 인체의 각기 다른 기능, 질병, 상처들을 보여준다.

The sinewy muscles of this male cadaver are cut open in places such as the lower back and the legs to show metal prostheses after an injury.

이 남성의 건강한 근육질 시체는 등 하부, 다리같은 부분을 절개하여, 부상당한 후의 보철물을 하고 있는 모습을 보여준다.

Visitors also have the chance to touch a human brain and a human heart. 

또한 방문객들은 인간의 뇌와 심장을 만져볼 수 있는 기회를 가진다.

Both organs, like the rest of the specimens at the exhibition, have been through the polymer process.

전시회에 있는 다른 표본들처럼 두 장기도 폴리머 처리를 거쳤다.

It is a revolutionary technique that uses silicone rubber to preserve human tissues.

이는 실리콘 고무를 이용하여 인체조직을 보호하는 혁신적인 기법이다.

The exhibition has generated some negative reaction from groups that say human bodies should not be displayed as exhibits.

그러나 전시회에는 일부 회의적인 시각또한 존재한다. 반대파들은 인체가 전시물로 사용되어서는 안된다고 말하고 있다. 

Others do not regard it as controversial.

하지만 다른사람들은 이를 논쟁거리로 생각하지 않는다.

"I think it is great. I think people who have donated their body for medinal science so that other people can learn is a wonderful thing. Because we can't learn how to cure new diseases and things if you don't understand the way the body is put together."
