크리스마스의 악마 : 크람푸스

When people think about Christmas, Santa Claus may come to mind fist. But there is another, lesser-known figure in the Christmas tradition. He is Krampus, a Christmas devil. He is famous in Germany, Austria, Hungary, and other European countries.

사람들이 크리스마스를 떠올릴 때면, 첫 번째로 산타 클로스가 떠오를 수 있다. 그러나 크리스마스 이야기에서 덜 알려진 인물이 있는데, 그가 크리스마스의 악마, 크람푸스 이다. 크람푸스는 독일, 오스트리아, 헝가리 등 유럽 등지에서 유명하다.

Krampus comes from an ancient German Christmas myth. In the myth, both Krampus and Santa Claus appear on December 6th each year. Santa Claus comes to give gifts to good children. However, Krampus comes to punish naughty children. 

크람푸스는 고대 독일의 신화에 등장한다. 이 신화 속에서 크람푸스와 산타 클로스는 매년 12월 6일 날에 등장한다. 산타 클로스는 착한 아이들에게 선물을 주기 위해서, 크람푸스는 나쁜 아이들을 벌하기 위해 내려온다.

He is half man and half beast. He has horns on his head, a dark, hairy body, and long claws. In fact, an old German word for “claw” is the origin of his name. He carries thin branches and chains to frighten bad children. He then puts them in a basket and takes them to hell. That is why many children are afraid of him. Every year, parents use this scary story to warn their children to behave well.

크람푸스는 반은 인간이고 반은 짐승인 반인반수이다. 그는 머리에 뿔이 있고, 짙은 털을 가진 몸과 길다란 발톱을 가지고 있다. 사실 독일 고어 “발톱”이 그의 이름의 기원이다. 그는 나쁜 어린이들을 놀래켜주기 위해 얇은 막대기와 체인을 가지고 다닌다. 그리고 그는 그 나쁜 아이들을 바구니에 담아 지옥으로 데려간다. 이것이 많은 아이들이 크람푸스를 두려워하는 이유이다. 매년, 부모들은 자녀들의 행동가짐을 올바르게 하라고 주의를 주기 위해 이 무서운 이야기를 사용한다.

Surprisingly, these days, interest in Krampus is growing. People on France and Finland are starting to hold Krampus celebrations. They dress as devils and walk through the streets at night. And now in Los Angeles, USA, there is a Krampus festival each December.

놀랍게도 오늘날, 크람푸스에 대한 관심이 증가하고 있다. 프랑스와 핀란드의 사람들은 크람푸스 축하 행사 개최를 시작한다. 그들은 악마 분장을 하고 밤 거리를 걷는다. 그리고 요즘 미국의 로스 엔젤레스에서도 크람푸스 축제가 열린다.
