When there is oil on your hands, your nose starts to itch. Right after you get in the shower, the doorbell rings. Every time you drop your toast, it falls on the jam side. Why do annoying things like this happen? You can blame Murphy’s Law

Murphy’s Law says, “If anything can go wrong, it will go wrong.” It is named after Edward Murphy. He was an engineer in the U.S. Air Force. In 1949, his team was doing an important project. One of the team’s members kept making mistakes, so Murphy became angry. He said loudly, “If there is any way to do something wrong, that guy will find it.”

Other people began repeating Murphy’s words when things went wrong. Finally, “Murphy’s Law” became well known in American culture.

Now, Murphy’s Law is a humorous way of looking at bad luck. It reminds us that annoying things can surely happen. And it can make us laugh even when we have bad luck.

오늘날, 머피의 법칙은 불운을 바라보는 유머의 한 종류가 되었다. 이는 우리에게 짜증스러운 일이 반드시 발생할 수 있음을 상기시켜주는 것과 동시에 아무리 불운을 경험하더라도 웃어 넘길 수 있도록 해준다.
