스키 충돌로 인한 사망사고, 그리고 유죄.

It was the last run of the last day of the ski season in Vail, Colorado, April 20th, 1997, when two skiers, total strangers, collided. 18 years old Nathan Hall had just finished his day working as a chair life operator. 33 years old Alan Cobb was skiing that day with his fiance Christi Neville, savoring their last run. Suddenly, Christi heard a horrifying sound.

1997년 4월 20일, 콜로라도 주 베일에서 스키 시즌 마지막 날에 탄 마지막 스키였다. 그 때, 스키를 타고 있던 생면부지의 사람 두 명이 충돌했다. 18살의 나단 홀은 스키 리프트 일을 막 마친 참이었다.    

33살의 앨런 콥은 그의 피앙새 크리스티 네빌과 함께 마지막 스키를 즐기고 있었다. 갑가기 크리스티는 끔찍한 소리를 들었다.

"I turned around and as I started to turn my head around, I saw this blur of yellow fly past me in the air."

"뒤를 돌아봤어요. 그리고 고개를 주위로 돌리는 순간, 노란 어떤 것이 제 뒤에서 날아가는 것을 봤어요."

"Nathan Hall skied and chose to ski in a reckless fashion and disregarded the safety of other people."

"나단 홀은 스키를 탔어요. 무책임한 방법으로 탔었죠. 그리고 다른 사람의 안전에는 관심이 없었어요."

The defense claimed this was a tragic accident, that Nathan lost control in difficult conditions.

변호인단은 나단이 어려운 상황속에서 통제를 할 수 없었다며 비극적인 사고라고 주장한다.

"He was sitting back on the skis..."

"그(나단)는 스키 위에 주저 앉았습니다."

But after two days of testimony and 17 hours of deliberations, the jury found Nathan guilty of a lesser felony, criminally negligent homicide. He now faces 3 years in prison. Sentencing is scheduled for tomorrow. Today, in hindsight, Nathan admits he was skiing too fast for the conditions that day, and that while he doesn't think he should have been prosecuted for a felony, he says he is sorry. 

하지만 이틀 동안의 증언과 17 시간의 조사 후에, 배심원은 나단을 중범죄와 부주의한 과실치사로 유죄를 선고했다. 그는 징역 3년을 마주하고 있으며, 선고는 내일로 예정되어 있다. 오늘, 나단은 돌이켜보니 자신이 그날 스키를 너무 빠른 속도로 탔다고 했다. 또한 그는 자신이 중죄로 기소되지 않았어야 했다고 하지만, 미안하다고 말한다.

"If I wouldn't have been skiing that fast, I probably wouldn't have lost control. And that accident wouldn't have happened, so... but you know, I gotta look at the facts and say it was my fault. I was skiing too fast."

"스키를 그렇게 빠르게 타지 않았더라면, 스스로를 통제할 수 있었겠죠. 그리고 그 사고는 일어나지 않았을 거구요. 에.. 사실은 말하자면 제 잘못입니다. 제가 너무 빠르게 스키를 탔어요."

But it's an apology that comes too late for Alan's fiance.

그러나 앨런의 약혼녀에게는 너무 늦은 사과가 되었다.
