Dummies are life-sized dolls that look like humans. They represent all sizes of adults, children, and even babies. Unlike toy dolls, dummies have many important uses in society.

인체 모형은 사람과 유사한 모양의 실물 크기 인형이다. 더미는 성인, 어린이 뿐만 아니라 유아의 크기 까지 있다. 장난감 인형과는 달리 더미는 사회에서 매우 중요한 용도를 가지고 있다.

 

In the world of fashion, dummies are commonly called “mannequins.” Most clothing stores use them to display fashion items in their windows. And fashion designers use mannequins instead of human models when they make new clothes.

패션 업계에서 더미는 보통 마네킹으로 불리운다. 대부분의 의류 상점에서 그들의 진열창에 패션 상품을 전시하기 위해 더미를 사용한다. 또한 패션 디자이너는 새로운 옷을 만들 때, 실제 사람 모델 대신 마네킹을 사용 한다.

 

Dummies are also used in health care. Doctors, nurses, and rescue workers use them to learn first-aid skills. These days, there are even high-tech dummies. Doctors use them to practice new kinds of difficult surgery.

더미는 헬스 케어 업계에서도 사용이 된다. 의사, 간호사, 구조대원들은 응급 처치의 학습을 위해 더미를 사용한다. 오늘날에는 심지어 첨단 기술로 제작된 더미들도 있다. 의사는 새로운 종류의 어려운 수술을 연습하기 위해 이를 사용한다.

Finally, in the car industry, crash test dummies are used to check the safety of new cars. They are put inside a car which is designed for a crash. During the crash, special sensors inside them show how “hurt” they are. The results are used to figure out possible human injuries in car accidents. In this way, crash test dummies help car designers make cars safer for people.

마지막으로 자동차 산업이다. 충돌 시험 더미는 새로운 차량의 안전성을 시험하기 위해 사용되어진다. 그들은 충돌을 위해 디자인 된 차량 내부에 놓여진다. 충돌이 진행되는 동안, 더미에 내재된 특수 센서들은 더미들이 얼마나 손상을 입었는지를 알려준다. 이 결과들은 교통사고에서 발생할 수 있는 인체의 손상을 알아내는 데 이용된다. 이러한 방식으로 충돌 테스트 더미는 차량 디자이너들이 사람들을 위해 더 안전한 차를 만들 수 있도록 도움을 준다.

 

Without them, people would not be able to try out new ideas and skills. And in some cases, they can even help save lives.
