The International Astronomy Olympiad (IAO) is an exciting science contest for middle and high school students that started in Russia in 1996.

국제 천문 올림피아드는 1996년 러시아에서 시작된 중, 고등학생을 위한 흥미로운 과학 경진 대회이다.

 

It now includes around 20 other countries. A different country hosts it each time.

오늘날 이 대회는 20개국 이상을 포함하고 있으며, 매년 다른 국가가 대회를 개최한다.

 

Each year, competing countries send five students and two team leaders to the IAO. To enter the contest, every student on the team must be between 14 and 18 years old. The students score points by solving difficult astronomy and science problems. These problems aim to test the students’ knowledge, imagination, and creative thinking. They are given in English and Russian only. So the team leaders must sometimes translate the problems for their teams.

매년 참가국들은 다섯 명의 학생과 두 명의 팀장들을 국제 전문 올림피아드 대회에 보낸다. 대회에 참가하기 위해서는 모든 학생들의 나이는 14세에서 18세 사이여야 한다. 참가 학생들은 어려운 천문학과 과학 문제를 해결함으로써 점수를 획득한다. 이러한 문제들의 목적은 참가 학생들의 지식, 상상력, 그리고 창의적인 생각을 시험하는 것이다. 문제는 오직 영어와 러시아어로만 주어진다. 따라서 때때로 팀장들은 팀원들에게 문제를 번역해주어야 한다.

 

The IAO has three rounds: a theory round, a data round, and on observation round. Each round normally takes about four hours. Perhaps the most exciting part is the observation round. During it, the students observe stars and planets in the sky with telescopes.

국제 천문 올림피아드는 이론, 데이터, 관찰 라운드로 이루어져 있다. 각각의 라운드는 일반적으로 네 시간 정도가 소요된다. 그 동안에 학생들은 망원경을 이용해 하늘의 별과 행성을 관찰한다.

 

Although the IAO is a contest, its main purpose is to promote international friendship. It lets students from different countries meet and solve problems together.

국제 천문 올림피아드는 경진대회이지만, 대회의 주요 목적은 국제 관계를 향상시키는 것이다. 이는 각기 다른 국가의 학생들을 만나게 해주고, 함께 문제를 해결하게 해준다.
